Biography / Dawid
“The Swedish artist Dawid has for over thirty years been making series of photographically based artworks examining the nature of the medium and exploring issues of perception. He began photographing in the late sixties, documenting incongruous moments with a wry sense of humour, until he established his signature style of stark graphic illustration, initiated by the seminal Rost series. Recent work toys with the implications of digitalisation and continues a life´s work which reflects, critiques and parallels the chequered history and changing status of photography.” MICHAEL MACK
“Then there is Dawid, a real veteran, Sweden´s leading art photographer over the past decades. He´s an extreme minimalist, conducting almost scientific studies of the shapes of things. His strengths are his stern eye for form and his radical approach to photography. He concentrates on his own ideas, which are always original and frequently brilliant. For Stockholm New, it was interesting lifting Dawid´s stripped-down, ascetic visual expression into a more ‘flowery’, glamorous context. It was a contrast that attracted a lot of attention. Especially the folklore feature, which was originally Dawid´s idea, has had a very big influence, I dare say, in Sweden and internationally.”
